'Circa 2012 - 2013'. Auckland jeweller Raewyn Walsh will be showing a selection of her latest creations, beautifully crafted necklaces in their most simplistic form. 

Raewyn likes to use traditional jewellery making and silversmithing techniques. Methods such as raising, chasing and repousse help create her collection. Her reference to the vessel is a feature of her pieces where it represents both form and formlessness. 

MakeShift: a Collaboration with Raewyn Walsh and Kristin D'Agostino

The Jewellers Guild of Greater Sandringham is pleased to present:

makeShift: a jewellery exhibition resulting from

a collaboration between Kristin D’Agostino and Raewyn Walsh. 

What happens when a workshop is shared and the craftspeople that inhabit the space are interested in reconnecting with the jewellery wearer, while maintaining individuality?  In Raewyn and Kristin’s experience, their ideas, materials and processes have crossed over at times and they have seen similarities appear in their work.  However, because of this and out of respect
of the other’s oeuvre, they have managed to restrict their individual practices so as not to encroach on each other’s jewellery ‘territory’.

Raeywn and Kristin have recently extended their collaborative endeavors into an experimental project that goes beyond the traditional view of craft as a display of virtuosity, to assert jewellery as a practice that actively connects with its audience.  They have used the collaboration to take their work to a new place, where shared artistic concepts, materials, and processes are privileged, and extend their individual practices at the same time. In doing so, their desire is to lift the restrictions they have imposed on themselves, both real and imagined.

Raewyn Walsh takes home the Objective Award 2011

Congratulations to Raewyn Walsh who picked up this year’s biggest prize – the premier award for Vessel 2011, (copper, paint, graphite and cast resin) 

Guest judge Deborah Crowe said that the first prize work was striking for its simplicity and confident in its execution. “This work stood out to the judging panel for its poise, deft manipulation of materials and sophisticated referencing of the past in a contemporary context” she explained.

Raewyn Walsh - jewellery box last day

Raewyn Walsh is in the Masterworks jewllery box this month.  She taken a nice step from her dark stacked objects into colour.  She is still investigating the silver tea service and intervening with its reading and function, but the subtle introduction of colour adds an exciting new aspect. Here is how Raewyn describes the work:

I am still interested in the vessel, especially the silver tea service, and this time I have set my sights on the vessel accoutrements; those parts that are added on but which also define the use and function of said vessel. Here the teapot spout is recast as a brooch and spoon handles become pendants that are long enough to be held.
